14th Region All “A” Semi-Final Preview – Boys and Girls

On Saturday, the 14th Region Basketball All “A” Classic Semi-Finals for both boys and girls will take place at Breathitt County High School inside Fairce O. Woods Coliseum.

Game 1 (Girls) – Leslie County v. Hazard:

Leslie County is 9-5 on the season and holds a 3-2 record against teams in the 14th region. The Lady Eagles are one of the youngest teams in the state. They have no sophomores, two juniors and just one senior. Despite this, the Lady Eagles lead the state in RPG (43.6).

Senior guard Lexy Meyers ranks third in the state in PPG (25.8), third in the state in FT% (90.1%) and leads the state in 3-pointers made per game (4.4).

Hazard (8-4) is led by a strong backcourt which features Hayley Caudill, Hailee Mullins, and Desiree Sturgill. The trio combines for over 40 points per game, while shooting a combined 79% from the free-throw line.

Caudill ranks 20th in the state in FT% while Sturgill ranks 37th in the state. As a team, the Lady Bulldogs rank 12th in the state in FT%.

Game 2 (Girls) – Knott County Central v. Buckhorn:

Knott County Central is 9-6 on the season and is 6-0 against teams in the 14th region. The Lady Patriots are a very balanced team as they have six players who average at least 7.0 PPG. Presley Fletcher leads Knott Central in points scored with an average of 10.9 PPG.

The Lady Patriots rank 15th in the state in FG% (44.7%) and 14th in the state in 3-point percentage (35.4%), while ranking 19th in the state in PPG (62.0).

Buckhorn is 5-8 on the season with a 5-4 record against teams in the 14th region. The Lady Wildcats enter Saturday’s contest on a three-game winning streak. On the season, they have victories over Buckhorn, Jackson City (2), June Buchanan, and Lee County.

Game 3 (Boys) – Cordia v. Hazard:

The Cordia Lions are 7-9 on the season and hold a 4-2 record against 14th region teams. The Lions have victories over Pikeville, Perry County Central, Letcher County Central, Jackson City, and Breathitt County, to name a few.

Cordia is a team composed of upperclassmen as they have three juniors and five seniors. Senior guard Darryen Pringle is averaging 18.8 PPG which leads the team. Fellow senior Kalil Harris is third on the team in PPG (11.5) and leads the team in RPG (9.7). Harris ranks 28th in the state in RPG.

The Hazard Bulldogs are 10-2 on the season with a 2-0 record against teams in the 14th region. Hazard won the WYMT Mountain Classic earlier this season. The Bulldogs won two of their three games in the Mountain Classic by double digits.

Despite averaging 62 PPG, the Bulldogs are led by their defense. Hazard allows 50.4 PPG which ranks 13th in the state and second in the region to Estill County.

Game 4 (Boys) – Knott County Central v. Buckhorn:

Knott County Central is 11-3 this season and holds a 6-0 record against 14th region teams. The Patriots rank fourth in the state in 3-point percentage (43.1%). On average, Knott County Central makes over six 3-pointers per game.

The Patriots are led in scoring by Colby Napier who averages nearly 20 PPG. Forwards Josh McGuire and Jason Williams combine for over 20 PPG and 16 RPG.

Buckhorn is 6-7 on the season and 4-0 against teams in the 14th region. Buckhorn ranks third in the state in RPG and led the state in that category earlier this season.

The Wildcats are led in scoring by sophomore center Christian Collins who averages 15.3 PPG and 8.6 RPG. Junior guard Kobe Bowling is second on the team in PPG (13.5) and third on the team in RPG (8.2). Sophomore center Dylan Knight is third on the team in PPG (9.4) and first on the team in RPG (9.8).
