14th Region Baseball – Week 6 Recap

14th Region Baseball Heads into May!

14th Region Baseball coverage sponsored by Appalachian Regional Health Care!!!

April 29, 2019 – JJ Baker – Bluegrass Sports Nation Baseball Columnist

In just 3 short weeks all the practice games for the season will wind down and the real season will start. After six full weeks of the regular season have passed, what have we learned?

By this time of the year, teams are who they are. Sure, anyone can get hot at the right time and knock someone off, but that’s baseball. Pitching and fielding rotations are being shored up and batting lineups have been tweaked, changed, tweaked again, and coaches are settling in on what order is best for them. Baseball is a grind for a reason. It’s a game of consistency and patience. Playing a lot of games will reveal weaknesses and strengths and let you build on and improve both.

Week 6 in the 14th helped several teams creep above .500 for the first time since early in the season. The most notable of those were Wolfe County and Owsley County. Both teams have scratched wins out all season and their persistence paid off this week with both going even in the win/loss column. The Wolves finished Week 6 with a 9-8 season standing and the Owls closed out the week by bringing their record to 7-7.

The 14th has been very competitive all season and even with the competitiveness, 9 of the 14 teams are at, or above .500. The 14th region Tournament is setting up to be an absolute fight and may be one of the most enjoyable in the past few years. The Hazard Bulldogs have the most wins on the season, sitting at 16-4, but one of those loses came at the hands of a 14-8 Perry Central squad who have just put their head down and worked their way to what may be another 20-25 win season. The Breathitt County Bobcats are also the owner of a 14 win record, with the most notable win of the season coming during the All A Semi-final that saw them upset the Knott County Central Patriots. Estill County has been coming on as of late as well. The Engineers have a 13 win season of their own and just beat a good Letcher Central team at home 8-1.

Who knows what the end of the season will hold for the 14th. We do know who the winner will face the first game of Semi-state. The 14th region drew the 13th and that Sweet 16 game will likely be played at a college field at a relative neutral location on June 1st (rumor as of now is possibly EKU). With just a few weeks left, teams are anxiously awaiting the post season and a run toward Whitaker Bank Park and the Elite 8!
