Cardinals Defeat Boston College 3-2 in Double OT Thriller

Cherif Dieye scored the game winner in the 105th minute

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Cherif Dieye’s game-winner with 5:25 left in the second overtime sealed the University of Louisville men’s soccer team’s 3-2 victory over Boston College on Friday (Oct. 18) at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-4-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in ACC play. The Eagles fall to 7-3-3 on the year and 1-3-2 in conference action.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the 7th minute on a goal by Stefan Sigurdarson. The Cardinals were limited to two shots in the first half, one of which came on goal.

The Cardinals found the equalizer in the 47th minute after a short pass from Cherif Dieye in front of the goal line connected with Izaiah Jennings on the right side. Jennings deposited the ball into the bottom left corner of the far post for his second goal of the season.

Boston College took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute on a second goal by Sigurdarson, it was the Eagles only shot attempt of the second half.

Leonard Getz’s first collegiate goal tied the game with 39 seconds left in regulation. From the left side of the box, Getz spun around a BC defender and fired a shot that bounced off the far right post and into the net.

The Cards put two shots on goal in the first overtime period while holding the Eagles without a shot. The Cardinals sealed the 3-2 victory in the 105th minute. Kino Ryosuke’s pass from the left side of the box deflected off an Eagle defender to Dieye, who sent a shot to the bottom right corner, sending the UofL bench storming onto the field in celebration.

The Cardinals are back in action Tuesday, October 22 when they host Temple for a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
