Fireflies pull away late for 7-2 win over Legends

David Thompson and Dash Winningham each drove in two runs and the Columbia Fireflies took a 7-2 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday night in Columbia.

The Fireflies took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Vinny Siena singled with one out and came home on a double by Thompson.    The Legends evened the score in the third on a triple by Cody Jones and a sacrifice fly by Jecksson Flores.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth.  Siena led off with a triple and scored on Thompson’s single.   Thompson stole second, continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Chase Vallot and scored on a passed ball.

The Fireflies added three runs in the seventh.  Vicente Lupo led off with a double, and after Jose Garcia walked, Lupo moved to third on Ivan Wilson’s fly ball to right field.  Tucker Tharp singled, scoring Lupo.  Siena was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.  Winningham’s single to center field scored two runs, giving Columbia a 6-1 lead.

Each team added a run in the eighth to close the scoring.

Columbia starter P.J. Conlon (3-0) gave up one run on seven hits in seven innings to get the win.  Legends starter Emilio Ogando (2-1) took the loss.  He allowed four hits and three runs, two earned, in five and one-third innings.
