KHSAA Board of Control Ends Covid-19 Dead Period on May 31, Sets Return of Athletics in Segments

May 28, 2020 – Brendon D. Miller

The KHSAA Board of Control met this afternoon via a Zoom conference to decide the process for the resumption of prep sports. In summary, (this is unofficial until the KHSAA issues the official guidelines) the Board of Control made the following decisions for the period of June 1 to July 12th.

The normal Dead Period for the summer (June 25 to July 9) has been waived and will not exist for 2020.

The currently imposed Dead Period due to COVID-19 will end on May 31st, with the rest of the process to be addressed in Segments:

Segment 1: June 1 to June 14 – Programs may begin preparation for resumption. Coaches and players may have contact, but no activity on School Campus.

Segment 2: June 15 to June 28 – Athletes may be on School Campus and can begin conditioning (if allowed by individual School Board and Health Department) – groups of no more than 10

Segment 3: June 29 – July 12 – Low Contact sports can begin competition, high contact sports can begin specialized drills.

More to come from the KHSAA when these guidelines are officially published and released.
