Lexington Legends – Charleston takes 9-2 win in series finale

Dermis Garcia hit two home runs to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 9-2 win over the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Charleston took the lead with a run in the top of the first inning.  Pablo Olivares led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Brandon Wagner.  Walks to Isiah Gilliam and Steven Sensley forced home a run.

Garcia’s two-run homer in the third inning gave Charleston a 3-0 lead, and the RiverDogs added two more runs in the fourth.   Consecutive singles by Oswaldo Cabrera, Eduardo Navas and Pablo Olivares produced a run.  Diego Castillo’s single loaded the bases, and Navas came home on a ground out to first by Wagner.

Garcia led off the fifth with his second home run of the game, and the RiverDogs led 6-0.

The Legends scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth.   With one out, Martin Gasparini doubled, and Michael Gigliotti walked.  Meibrys Viloria popped out to third, but Emmanuel Rivera doubled to right field, scoring Gasparini and Gigliotti.  Rivera, who had two doubles in the game, leads the South Atlantic League in hits with 125.

Charleston extended its lead in the eighth inning.  Navas led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Olivares.  Castillo and Wagner walked, loading the bases, and Isiah Gilliam doubled home two runs and sending Wagner to third.  Wagner scored when Sensley grounded out.

Charleston starter Freicer Perez (9-3) worked five innings and got the win.

Legends starter Ofreidy Gomez (5-11) was the losing pitcher.

Charleston swept the four-game series and extended the Legends losing streak to eight games.
