Stoops Has Confidence in the CATS

Jacob Noger - UK Athletics

UK is facing a difficult schedule, but it looks as though they will be ready for the challenge.

With the start of Kentucky’s season just three weeks away, the UK football coaches have largely made positive comments about how the team is performing in practice. On Saturday, the team held another intrasquad scrimmage. From all accounts, the scrimmage was a successful one with no major injuries.

In Saturday’s press conference, Coach Stoops said, “I feel like we’re getting closer…. I felt like we improved, offensively in particular. I felt like we were a little more consistent moving the football. (We) still got to execute in the red zone and get the ball in the end zone, but (we) had some really good drives.”

While you can get an idea of where the team stands through practice and intrasquad scrimmages, there is still some level of uncertainty. On Saturday, Stoops said, “I have a lot of confidence in a lot of the groups and a lot of the guys, but until you get out there and play there are a lot of unknowns. That’s what makes it exciting. That’s what makes the first game exciting.”

Offensively, wide receiver Clevan Thomas Jr. spoke positively about the UK running game during Saturday’s press conference, but he seemed particularly excited about the Cats’ passing attack. “Offensively – passing wise – they got to see us, cause we’re coming,” Thomas said.

Another piece of positive news for BBN came when Mark Stoops told reporters that senior kicker Matt Ruffolo went 5-of-6 on Saturday, which included a make from 50+ yards. Last season, UK’s extra point/field goal kicking struggled at times, but it appears that won’t be an area of concern this season.

The Cats open their season on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Auburn. The game will be televised on the SEC Network, and is scheduled to start at noon ET.
