Volleyball – COLONELS FALL IN FOUR SETS AT DEFENDING OVC CHAMP MURRAY STATE

eku-logo-2MURRAY, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University defense tallied 12 blocks and five Colonels recorded 10 or more digs as the volleyball team lost 3-1 on Saturday to defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Murray State University.

Murray State won by scores of 25-22, 28-26, 23-25, and 25-18.

The Colonels recorded their third-highest block total of the season. Freshman Kaylin Johnson tied a career-high with five blocks for EKU. Sophomore Cassie Knutson and freshman Rachel Woody recorded double-doubles in the loss. Junior Celina Sanks dropped 13 kills and a career-high three service aces.

Murray State took the first two sets. The teams traded blows early in the opening set, before the Racers claimed four straight points to break a 6-6 tie. MSU slowly extended its lead, before clinching the set, 25-22.

The Racers held off the Colonels in the second set, 28-26. The Colonels pushed first-place MSU late in the set, before MSU took the final two points in the frame.

EKU led by as many as six in the third, winning the set. However, the Racers picked up the victory by closing out the fourth set.

Scottie Ingram led the way for the Racers with a match-high 26 kills and 16 digs.

The Colonels conclude the regular season next weekend on the road at Belmont University and Tennessee State University.

Friday’s match at Belmont is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
