To end the year, 14th Region teams traveled near and far this past week to take part in holiday tournaments and showcases. It continues to be a crazy year on the girl’s side with no one pulling away as a favorite to this point in the Region. Here is our BSN weekly review and new Region rankings.
53rd DISTRICT
CORDIA (0-7) – Cordia did not play this week.
JUNE BUCHANAN (3-4) – June Buchanan split their games at the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic at Buckhorn. The Lady Crusaders won their first game over Jackson City 53-50. They were then defeated by host Buckhorn 48-28.
KNOTT CENTRAL (6-6) – Knott County Central finished play in the Arby’s Holiday Classic at McCreary Central with a 58-50 win over Shelby County. The Lady Patriots then played in the Pikeville Invitational. Knott Central opened with a blowout loss to Boyd County 73-41. They bounced back with a 66-60 win over Mason County. Knott Central finished the tournament with a 49-38 loss to Pikeville to finish the week at 2-2.
LETCHER CENTRAL (8-5) – Letcher County Central played in the Berea Holiday Classic. The tournament started well for the Lady Cougars with an 81-75 overtime win over Woodford County. Male defeated Letcher Central in the next round 67-62. The Lady Cougars finished the tournament 1-2 after a 61-56 loss to Owen County.
54th DISTRICT
BUCKHORN (4-8) – It was a good week for Buckhorn, as they won both of their games in the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. They opened with a 53-36 win over Lee County. The Lady Wildcats followed that up with a 48-28 win over June Buchanan.
HAZARD (5-4) – Hazard opened the week with a home win over Pike County Central by a score of 51-38. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Freeport, Florida to participate in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout. Hazard lost their first game 70-61 to Pace (Florida). They followed that with a dominant 58-15 win over Maclay (Florida) to finish the week at 2-1.
LESLIE COUNTY (6-5) – Leslie County hosted the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic. The Lady Eagles won their first game 87-79 over East Ridge. In their second game, they lost to Harlan County 67-51. They finished the classic with a 54-50 loss to Owsley County in a very good game. Leslie County went 1-2 on the week and is 2-5 after a 4-0 start.
PERRY CENTRAL (2-10) – The struggles continued for Perry Central at the Berea .Holiday Classic. They opened with a 50-37 loss to Owen County. The Lady Commodores then lost to Edmonson County 74-67. Perry Central finished the tournament 0-3 after a 74-58 loss to Logan County. Perry Central has dropped 7 in a row and 9 of 10.
55th DISTRICT
BREATHITT COUNTY (1-7) – Breathitt County did not play this week.
JACKSON CITY (4-5) – Jackson City split their games at the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. They lost a close one to June Buchanan 53-50. They came back with a 49-32 victory over Lee County.
RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN (5-2) – Riverside did not play this week.
WOLFE COUNTY (8-3) – Wolfe County hosted the Farmers and Traders Bank Classic. They split their 2 games. They started with a 64-54 win over Phelps. Wolfe County lost a heartbreaker to Danville 46-45.
56th DISTRICT
ESTILL COUNTY (3-7) – Estill County played in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County. They were soundly defeated by Martin County 69-39. They lost their next game to Harrison County 48-34. Estill County finished the tournament with an 80-43 loss to Montgomery County.
LEE COUNTY (0-9) – Lee County is still searching for their first win after 2 losses at the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. They lost to host Buckhorn 53-36 and then to Jackson City 49-32.
OWSLEY COUNTY (7-4) – Owsley County traveled to Leslie County to take part in the Hyden Citizen’s Bank Classic. They began play with a 47-35 loss to Harlan County. Owsley County came back with a 76-68 win over East Ridge in overtime. The Lady Owls finished play with a 54-50 win over host Leslie County in a battle of regional contenders.
POWELL COUNTY (2-8) – Powell County traveled to Bourbon County to play in the BSN Holiday Classic. It was not a kind trip for the Lady Pirates as they finished 0-3. They opened with a 58-46 loss to Bourbon County. They followed that with a 64-50 loss to East Jessamine. In their final game, Powell County was edged 57-55 by Lafayette.
