Lady Cougars advance to Rupp with 45-40 win

WHITESBURG – March 7, 2020

Letcher Central fought back after a slow start to make a home for the 2020 Regional Championship Trophy at LCC. Coach Keith Baker and the Lady Cougars wrestled the trophy away from the three-time defending champions Lady Patriots.

The Lady Patriots opened strong running out to a 13-5 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter by pressing and getting baskets in transition. Knott continued their run in the 2nd quarter eventually opening the largest lead of the game at 21-10. Letcher then began to connect and ended the half on a 7-0 run to set the half time score at 21-17.

Baker slowed the pace in the 2nd half by limiting transition baskets by Knott. The Lady Cougars out scored the Lady Patriots 14-12 in the third to send the game to the 4th with Knott still in the lead 33-31.

The decisive quarter went to the Lady Cougars as they held their composure down the stretch for the five point win, and the Regional Championship.
