Jackson, Kentucky – October 25, 2024 – Mitchel Herald
There’s no place like home. For the first time since gutting out a close win against the Hazard Bulldogs more than a month ago, the Breathitt County Bobcats returned to the friendly confines of the Mike Holcomb Athletic Complex and delivered their best outing of the season to date, beat the visiting Danville Admirals 50-0 behind a balanced offensive attack and the best performance of the season from an improving defensive unit.
The Bobcats took control of the game on the first possession when they capped off their opening drive with a 37-yard TD pass from Miles Hollon to Austin Sperry and never looked back from there. The defense did its part stopping a pair of first quarter Danville drives, the first time on downs and forcing a three-and-out on the second. The Bobcat offense responded with touchdown drives each time to take a commanding 20-0 lead into the second quarter.
Credit to the visiting Admirals and QB Nathan Doyle for producing their best drive of the night in an attempt to stay in the game, but the Bobcat defense once again answered the call when Austin Barker ended a 9 play drive with an interception at the 8 yard line. The home team delivered the knockout blow with a 5-play, 92 yard drive to go up 28-0, highlighted by a 66 yard pitch and catch between Hollon and Sperry on the first play of the drive to flip the field. Jayden Gibson would add a final TD before the teams traded a pair of interceptions to close the half with the home team leading comfortably, 36-0.
The Bobcats took care of business in the second half, scoring on their only two possessions and keeping the Admirals off the scoreboard to produce their first full-game shutout of the season. For the second straight week, the defense did an excellent job against a pass-heavy offense as the visitors threw the ball on 40 of their 47 plays. The Bobcats were able to apply consistent pressure to force quick and errant throws, resulting in less than 3 yards per attempt and two interceptions.
Offensively, balance was the name of the game. QB Miles Hollon had his best game of the season completing 80% of his passes for 228 yards and 2 TDs. The backfield produced 205 rushing yards on almost 9 yards per carry, lead by Jayden Gibson’s 78 yards and six different receivers caught passes, lead by Austin Sperry with 103 yards.
Next Up – The Bobcats (4-5) have clinched second place in the district and a home playoff game and will host Prestonsburg (9-0) as they hope to close the season with a third straight win and carry momentum into the postseason.
