Breathitt extended their lead in the 2nd Quarter behind seven from Freshman big man Bryce Hoskins. Hoskins knocked down a long three and Fugate hit his 1st three of the game and contributed five in the quarter. Carpenter scored five more on the Quarter to be the game’s leading scorer at the half with 12. At the half, Breathitt led by eight 32-24.
The teams played to a 15-15 time in the 3rd Quarter. Zack Carpenter turned up the scoring with eight for Wellspring. The Quarter was highlighted by Fugate knocking down two threes and reaching the 1,000 point plateau for his career! End of the 3rd, Breathitt was still in control by eight, 47-39.
Wellspring made a valiant comeback in the 4th Quarter behind six by Zion Payne and four deep threes. Zack Carpenter had two threes down the stretch to bring his game total to 16, second for game-high to his brother Isaac. Breathitt survived as Turner led in the Quarter with four and made the winning basket in the final seconds. The Bobcats made it interesting as they were only 2 for 6 from the line down the stretch.
Particularly noteworthy were the Carpenter brothers for Wellspring are the sons of Breathitt County natives Jason Carpenter and Katrina Faulkner Carpenter. So it was a great homecoming for the Carpenter family, and the brothers put on a show for the family friends in the Coliseum!
