Cordia Stuns Perry County Central

Perry County Central made the trip across Highway 80 to HIndman on a cold, snowy Tuesday night.  The Commodores came into the game 2-1, while the Cordia Lions were 1-2 on the young season.  Cordia has suffered double digit losses against Madison Southern and Shelby Valley before claiming a 71-70 victory over Pikeville.  This night, however, belonged to Cordia, as they came away with a 72-69 victory, despite cold shooting in the first half and struggles at the free throw line throughout.

Cameron Fugate opened the scoring for Perry Central with a bucket 14 seconds into the game.  Cordia’s Myles LaPointe matched him at the other end.  This would be the only tie of the first quarter.  Darryen Pringle made a lay-up for Cordia to cut the Perry lead to 7-5 with 5:49 to go in the first quarter.  Dylan Brock went on a scoring tear for the Commodores, scoring their next 10 points on 5-5 shooting to give Perry a 17-11 lead with 2:50 to go in the 1st period.  A DeAndre Reed bucket extended Perry’s lead to 19-11 with 2:10 to go in the quarter.  Darryen Pringle scored the last five points of the quarter for Cordia to cut the Perry Central lead to 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.  Dylan Brock led all scorers with 10 points in the quarter.  Pringle led the Lions with 7 points.  Cordia hug around despite only shooting 6-18 from the field and 3-7 from the free throw line.

Jerome Thomas started the 2nd quarter with the first of his two 3-pointers in the period off the bench.  A Nazim Welch put back gave Cordia a 21-19 lead with 7:11 to go in the first half.  Perry Central answered with a 6-0 run to take a 25-21 lead with 5:48 to go in the 2nd quarter.  The teams went back and forth for the remainder of half, with Perry Central holding a 38-33 lead going into halftime.  Dylan Brock scored 15 points in the half for Perry Central on 7-8 shooting.  Perry Central shot 15-31 (48.4%) from the field and 7-7 from the free throw line.  Darryen Pringle led the way for Cordia with 12 points at the half.  Jeremiah Thomas provided a spark off of the bench with 8 points; all coming in the 2nd quarter.  Cordia struggle from the field in the first half, only shooting 12-34 (35.3%) from the field and 6-11 (54.5%) from the foul line.  They stayed close by dominating the boards on both ends.

Cordia scored the first 9 points of the second half to take a 42-38 lead with 5:56 to go in the 3rd quarter.  Commodore baskets by Dawson Duff and Dylan Cornett tied the game at 42-42 with 4:59 to go in the 3rd quarter.  Pringle quickly scored to give Cordia the lead back, but Dawson Duff answered with a 3-pointer to give Perry a 45-44 lead with 4:35 to go in the period.  Anthony Hidalgo came up big with back-to-back 3 pointers to give Cordia a 50-45 lead with 3:59 to go in the 3rd period.  Back-to-back Commodore baskets cut the lead to 50-49 with 3:10 to go.  Darryen Pringle outscored Perry Central 7-4 to give Cordia a 57-53 lead going into the final quarter.  Nazim Welch came up big with 10 points in the 3rd quarter for Cordia.  Cordia shot 62.5% from the field on 10-16 shooting and continued their strong rebounding performance.

Cordia opened the 4th quarter with another Anthony Hidalgo 3-pointer.  A driving score by Myles LaPointe gave Cordia a 62-53 lead with 6:54 to play.  Perry Central was far finished as DeAndre Reed was the catalyst of a 9-2 Commodore run that cut the Cordia lead to 64-62 with 3:55 to play.  Cordia scored on another put back to extend the lead to 66-62.  On Perry’s next possession, they missed 2 free throws.  Cordia raced up the floor and Pringle kicked it out to Hidalgo, who nailed his fourth 3-pointer of the game to give Cordia a 69-62 lead with 3:24 to play.  Dawson Duff drained a 3-pointer of his own to cut the lead to 69-65.  A Kahlil Harris free throw gave Cordia a 70-65 lead with 2:29 to play.   Darryen Pringle fouled out on the very next play, but Perry could not cash in at the foul line.  Nazim Welch go an offensive rebound and put back and was fouled with 1:28 to go giving Cordia a 72-65 lead.  He missed the free throw.  Tyler Day scored for Perry to cut the lead to 72-67 with 1:05 to play.  A Cordia turnover led to a DeAndre Reed score that cut the lead to 72-69 with 0:37 to play.  Cordia could not put it away at the line, and then put Perry Central on the line with 0:19 showing on the clock.  The Commodores missed both free throws.  This led to a Cordia breakaway, but they turned the ball over with 0:09 left.  Perry Central got 2 shots off, but neither fell, and Cordia came away with a 72-69 victory.  Cordia turnovers and poor free throw shooting for both teams was the story of the 4th quarter.  Cordia was 1-5 (20.0%) from the line and Perry was 1-9 (11.1%)

Darryen Pringle led Cordia with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.  Kalil Harris scored only 3 points, but had a monster game with 20 rebounds and 5 assists.  Cordia outrebounded Perry Central 43-28 for the game.  Cordia shot 28-62 (45.2%) from the field that included 7-17 (41.2%) from behind the 3-point arc. The Lions struggled from the free throw line, going only 9-21 (42.9%).  Dylan Brock led Perry Central with 17 points on 8-10 shooting.  Tyler Day had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists off the bench for the Commodores.  Perry ended the game 29-60 (48.3%) from the field.  The Commodores struggled from 3-point rage, going 3-12 (25.0%) for the game.  They finished 8-16 (50.0%) from the free throw line.
