Watts had Full Summer on Camp Circuit
JACKSON – August 28, 2019 – Brendon D. Miller
As the 2019 High School Volleyball season begins, Breathitt County is primed to be a contender in the 55th District and 14th Region. Coach Stephen Bowling has a roster full of returning contributors from last year’s team and the VolleyCats have high hopes for the season.
Principal in the VolleyCat plans for the season is Sophomore Setter Emalee Watts. Watts, though only a 10th grader, has plenty of experience as she has been playing varsity since the 7th grade. Emalee is coming off an exceptional Freshman campaign compiling 41 aces, 88.8% service percentage, 1.63 serve rating, 28 kills, 246 assists, and 49 digs.
Emalee has a passion for the game and continually puts in time and work on her skill set. This past summer Emalee took the initiative to hit the camp circuit to get better.
Emalee put her skills on display at camps at Berea College, Georgetown College, Lindsey Wilson College, Morehead State University, and then the UK Serving Camp, UK All-Skills Camp and UK Team Camp with the rest of the VolleyCats. Emalee’s performance at those camps certainly payed off in the short term as she was named to the Kentucky Volleyball Coach’s Association Preseason Watch List.
Speaking with BSN, Emalee related, “I enjoyed spending my summer attending different camps on different campuses. It was good to get the experience of different coaching styles and instruction in different ways. It was a great experience to help improve my skills.”
Coach Bowling when asked about Emalee, stated, “Volleyball in the 14th Region has grown and is not the same sport we played in years past. In order to be competitive, player need to work on volleyball almost year round in camps and at every opportunity you can find to hit the ball and improve.” Emalee exemplifies this.
The experiences will certainly pay off for the long term for the VolleyCats as when asked about her goals, Emalee listed being a leader for her team, and to lead the VolleyCats to an All A, District and Regional Championship. Emalee has the long term goal to play the game at the collegiate level, and if hard work and desire will get you there, Emalee has an excellent chance to fulfill that goal.
Best of Luck to Emalee and the VolleyCats this season.
