Kentucky Starts Fast, Then Stumbles

St. Louis – March 22, 2026 – Tony Hounshell

Kentucky opened the afternoon with confidence, knocking down early threes — including a pair from Collin Chandler — and building a double‑digit lead. The Wildcats were energetic, connected, and in rhythm.

But the warning signs appeared quickly. Kentucky’s ball security evaporated, and the Wildcats committed 11 turnovers in the first half, allowing Iowa State to slowly chip away. By halftime, the Cyclones had flipped the scoreboard and taken a 31–30 lead, despite Kentucky shooting the ball well.

🔹 Second Half: Iowa State Takes Control
The game’s tone changed immediately after the break. Iowa State tightened its defense, and Kentucky unraveled under the pressure. The Wildcats picked up five quick fouls, sending both Otega Oweh and Chandler to the bench with three fouls each. Without their full lineup and with their rhythm broken, Kentucky’s offense stalled.

Iowa State pounced.

The Cyclones turned stops into transition chances, attacked mismatches, and steadily built a double‑digit lead. Kentucky, meanwhile, looked disorganized — slow rotations, rushed shots, and more turnovers. By the time the Wildcats called timeout down 12 with 11 minutes left, the momentum had fully shifted.

🔹 Kentucky Can’t Recover
Kentucky never found its footing again. Iowa State’s pressure forced turnover after turnover — 17 in total — and the Wildcats’ three‑point shooting cooled to 6‑for‑18. Every attempt to mount a run was met with a Cyclone answer.

As the clock wound down, Iowa State’s confidence grew. Kentucky’s frustration did too.

The Cyclones closed the game with authority, stretching the lead to 19 and sealing a convincing win.

🔹 Final Score
Iowa State 82, Kentucky 63

The Cyclones move on to Chicago with momentum and swagger. Kentucky’s season ends with a performance defined by turnovers, foul trouble, and a second half that slipped away far too quickly.
