Owsley County cut the lead to 72-71 with about a minute remaining in the consolation game of the WYMT Mountain Classic in Hindman Friday before falling to Martin County 76-72. Martin was able to make most their free throws in the closing seconds to win the contest. It marked the second game in the Mountain Classic that the Lady Owls had been locked in a nail biter type game before losing.
Owsley jumped out to the early lead after the first quarter and led 19-17. Martin was able to outscore Owsley by 8 points in the second quarter to take a 37-31 lead into the locker room at the half. Owsley mounted several comebacks and was within 1 point late in the game but the Lady Cardinals held on to seal the victory.
Owsley placed four players in double figures. Carly Smith scored 17, Macey Brown 15, Addie Terry 14, and Laya Lynch 13. Also scoring for the Lady Owls were Shelby Murray with 8, Kenzie Grubb with 3, and Kamilla Marcum with 2. Brown led in rebounds with 15. Smith had 6 assists.
Guard Laken Williams was the star for the Lady Cards, scoring 30 points using her quickness to get to the rim and knocking down perimeter shots. She also led her team in steals, many ending with layups. Allyssa Allen had 10 points for the Cards, Kennadi Mollett 6, Chloe May 6 and Macie Maynard 8.
Lady Owl Carly Smith was named to the All Tournament team and Lady Cardinals Laken Williams was also named to the team.
