Lady Wolves Fall Short to Lewis County at State Tournament

The Wolfe County Lady Wolves and the Lewis County Lady Lions squared off at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday. The matchup featured the winners of the 14th and 16th Region tournaments in semi-state action. Carly Creech was the starting pitcher for the Lady Wolves, while Emily Cole was the starter for Lewis County.

Despite two hits, the Lady Lions were held scoreless in the top of the opening inning. Wolfe County scored in the bottom of the inning as a Nellee Lumpkins’ single allowed Lauryn Terrill to score.

After a scoreless second inning for each team, Lewis County registered eight runs on eight hits in the third inning. The Lady Wolves accounted for one run off three hits, while leaving two runners on base. The Lady Lions led 8-2 going into the fourth inning.

During the top of the fourth inning, the game was halted by a weather delay. Action resumed one hour and 49 minutes later, and neither team scored in the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Lewis County scored one run, while Wolfe County registered two runs when Chloy Creech and Lumpkins scored off a single by Macy Gullett. After five innings, the Lady Lions held a 9-4 advantage.

The Lady Wolves were able to cut into the Lewis County lead in the sixth inning by outscoring the Lady Lions 2-1, despite leaving three runners on base. The seventh inning was scoreless, and Lewis County picked up a 10-6 victory.

Wolfe County finished the season 23-10 (14-4 14th Region.) The Lady Lions, 22-8 (13-6 16th Region,) will advance to play the winner of the Boyle County vs. Johnson Central game.
