LEXINGTON – October 22, 2026 – Bradley Charles
We’re just seven games into this new era of Kentucky football. An era predicated on a progressive and high-powered offensive system among other features of the Will Stein regime.
Thus far, a lot of things with this new era seem to be the real deal. There are a number of people that would make that list. For example, it seems as though the entire coaching staff has been a great success. One of the people who would have to be on that list for the Cats is starting QB Kenny Minchey.
Minchey is certainly situated for success with Stein, offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, tight end Willie Rodriguez, the Big Blue Wall, etc., but Minchey is still deserving of praise for how he has flourished with this offense. A 6-1 (4-1 SEC) record to this point in the season is absolutely incredible; certainly for Stein’s first season.
Arguably the most impressive aspect of Minchey’s game has been his ability to minimize turnovers. Corey Price of the UK Sports Network reported on Sunday that Minchey is one of two QBs in the FBS this season with at least 13 touchdown passes, one interception or less, and a completion percentage of at least 68%. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah is also on that list.
Minchey is drawing comparisons to UK Athletics Hall of Fame QB Andre Woodson. The comparison makes sense considering they each wear No. 3, share a similar demeanor, and showcase a solid arm. By the time Woodson reached his staggering potential at Kentucky, he too was quite skilled at protecting the football. Woodson set the NCAA record for the most consecutive passes without an interception.
When evaluating Minchey, keep in mind that he received limited collegiate playing time prior to arriving at Kentucky. Given his ball security and composure, he looks like an established veteran QB instead of one who came into the season without a significant amount of in-game collegiate experience.
What Stein has been able to accomplish in his first season has been remarkable, and there are a lot of talented people who have helped reach that achievement. It’s obviously going to take a bevy of talented and dedicated individuals to accomplish what the Cats have achieved thus far this season.
Even with that, having the right quarterback is a pivotal part of the process. Thankfully, for BBN, Minchey has proven to be the right man for the job under center in Lexington.
