Asia Boone scored 16 points as No. 18 Kentucky lost to No. 4 Texas 64-53 on Monday night in Austin.
Kentucky (18-7, 5-6 Southeastern Conference) got 14 points and seven rebounds from Clara Strack and 12 points from Tonie Morgan.
Texas (23-2, 8-2) scored first before Teonni Key tied the game on a layup. After the Longhorns scored again, Strack scored on a putback to make it 4-4. The Cats took the lead on two Morgan free throws, but Texas scored the next seven to lead 11-6.
Strack stopped the run with a free-throw line jumper, then Boone hit a three to tie the game. Strack scored again to give the Cats a 13-11 lead, but Texas answered with eight in a row to lead by six. Morgan hit a three to cut the deficit in half, but Texas scored to lead 21-19. Amelia Hassett hit a three to get UK within two, but Texas scored the final points of the quarter and led 23-19 after one period.
The Longhorns hit a three to start the second quarter, but Boone answered with a three for the Cats on the next possession. Texas would score to lead by six, but Boone responded with consecutive threes to tie the game at 28 apiece. However, Texas scored the final 10 points of the half, and the ‘Horns led 38-28 at the half.
Texas scored first in the third quarter, hitting a three to lead by 13. Strack made one-of-two at the line and Key converted a layup to cut the deficit to 41-31. The Longhorns scored the next four before Strack hit a shot and Boone hit two free throws to cut the Texas lead to 45-35.
Boone scored again to get UK within eight, but Texas scored the next three. A Strack free throw, a Morgan basket and another Strack free throw cut the deficit to 48-41, which would be the score after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Key scored to cut the deficit to five. The teams would trade free throws before a Morgan jumper and Strack did the same, getting UK within one, 49-48. The Longhorns hit four consecutive free throws before Morgan drove to the basket and scored, cutting the deficit to 53-50.
Texas scored seven in a row to extend the lead to 10 before Strack hit a free throw to make it 60-51 with just over a minute to play, but the Cats would get no closer.
Kentucky returns to action on Thursday, hosting Texas A&M at Historic Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
