Booneville, Ky – January 22, 2024 – Deron Mays
Powell County, the defending 56th district champions, used a balance scoring attack with five players in double figures to defeat Owsley County in Booneville Monday.
The Pirates led 19-12 after one quarter and 47-32 at the half. They outscored the Owls in every quarter, winning the third 12-8 and the fourth 18-15.
Owsley had trouble making baskets throughout the game with Powell utilizing a sticky man-to-man defense. They made Owsley work hard for the points that they did make. On their end of the court they were making 3’s (8 for the game) and scoring numerous times on offensive boards and put backs.
Owsley’s players didn’t quit, and senior guard Jake McCoy finished with 22 points, but the Pirates were able to leave the Palace with a big district win to give them a 3-1 record in district play, with their one district loss coming last week to Estill County.
I don’t have any statistics on the game other than total points. McCoy was team high with 22 points. Dylan Gay scored 12 points, Wes Cope 6, Chase Pryse 5, Erick Craft 4, Trenton Herald 2 and Mason Smith had 4.
Powell County was led in scoring by Bryson Edwards with 18 points. Jack Rose scored 17 points, Braydon Brandenburg 14, Dylan Carter 10, Tucker Ramsey 11, Cameron Delrosario 2, Conner Morrison 3, Jon Creech 3 and Riley Faulkner had 2.
The Owls next game is Friday at home against Phelps High from Pike County.
