Irvine, Ky – March 4, 2024 – Deron Mays
Owsley County eased away from a tight first quarter game and managed a double digit 37-26 lead at the half to gain control of their first round regional matchup with Knott Central Monday in Irvine. The Lady Owls had three players knock down a pair of 3 pointers in the half that gave them a lead they never relinquished. Carly Smith, Laya Lynch and Addie Terry all had double figure points by halftime.
The Lady Patriots Kylie Gayheart was also hot from 3-land in the first half, making three treys, one at the end of the second quarter that cut Owsley’s lead from 14 to 11 at intermission. However, Owsley’s defense held Gayheart scoreless the rest of the game and fended off any serious rallies by Knott. In the meantime Macey Brown, Shelby Murray and Addie Terry were doing a good job rebounding and defending the interior. Owsley won the first three quarters and tied the last to claim a 59-43 victory. They now advance to Friday’s semifinal round where they will play Perry Central, a winner over Wolfe County in the evening’s second game.
Coach Travis Smith was pleased with the effort following the game. “We have had some great practices this week and I felt going into tonight’s game that we were focused and ready for the moment.”
