Student-athletes from six sports now working out
LEXINGTON – July 27, 2020
Student-athletes from six University of Kentucky teams – football, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, and swimming and diving – have returned to campus for workouts. The women’s basketball team is in the midst of its return and completing an initial screening process before beginning workouts.
Sixty student-athletes have returned to campus since July 8 and completed the initial screening process that now includes both antibody testing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic testing. Three of the 60 tested positive for past infection through antibody testing and two tested positive for current infection through PCR testing. The student-athletes who tested positive for current infection were required to quarantine in accordance with CDC and local health department guidelines. This group of 60 is comprised of teams that have newly returned to campus since a July 13 update (men’s soccer and swimming and diving), as well as student-athletes from the football, women’s soccer, volleyball and men’s basketball teams who have returned over the last two weeks.
In addition, 25 staff essential for workouts have completed PCR testing over the last two weeks. One tested positive and was required to quarantine in accordance with CDC and local health department guidelines.
UK Athletics will continue to actively monitor the situation surrounding COVID-19 and respond accordingly in collaboration with University of Kentucky leadership and the guidance of the Southeastern Conference. UK Athletics plans to continue current mitigation strategies and evaluate the need for additional testing on a regular basis.
