Week 2 was a big week of basketball in the 14th Region. Knott County Central hosted the WYMT Mountain Classic. Breathitt County hosted the Peggy Moore Classic. Perry Central and Cordia squared off in Hindman. District play started for some teams, while others traveled near and far for classics. Here is how the week went.
53rd DISTRICT
CORDIA (3-2) – Cordia won both of their games this week. The Lions started their week with a huge win at home against Perry County Central at home by a score of 72-69. Click for Story: https://bluegrasssportsnation.com/cordia-stuns-perry-county-central/
They followed that up with a convincing district win versus Letcher County Central 68-40.
JUNE BUCHANAN (0-3) – The Crusaders continued their struggles as they dropped their only game of the week at Red Bird 65-45.
LETCHER CENTRAL (0-4) – After 2 weeks, Letcher Central is still looking for their first win of the season. They traveled to Hindman and lost big to Cordia 68-40. Then on Friday, they traveled to Belfry and lost a heartbreaker 73-72.
KNOTT CENTRAL (3-2) – Knott County Central was one the 14th Region teams to participate in the WYMT Mountain Classic. They did not have to go far since they hosted the tournament. They opened the tournament with a 68-63 victory over Knox Central. In the semifinals, they came up short against Clay County, one of the top teams in the mountains, by a score of 75-61. The Patriots finished 3rd in the Mountain Classic by bouncing back with an 84-72 win over Martin County in the consolation game.
54th DISTRICT
BUCKHORN (2-2) – Buckhorn traveled to Knightstown, Indiana to play in the Hoosier gym. They lost to Robertson County 81-58.
HAZARD (6-0) – It was a big week for the Hazard Bulldogs. They went across Highway 80 to Knott County Central to participate in the WYMT Mountain Classic. They opened the tournament with a 61-55 victory over Phelps. In the championship game, the Bulldogs had their most impressive win of the young season, by defeating the Clay County Tigers 57-43 to become the Mountain Classic Champions for the 5th time. LESLIE COUNTY (0-4) – Leslie County traveled to London to take on North Laurel. It was a tough game as they were soundly defeated 73-39. The Eagles finished the week with another one-sided loss at home to Williamsburg by a score of 81-55.
PERRY CENTRAL (2-3) – Perry Central went winless in the second week of the season. They lost to Cordia on the road in an exciting game 72-69. They hosted Anderson County on Saturday and came up short 68-59.
55th DISTRICT
BREATHITT COUNTY (1-2) – Breathitt County lost their only game of the week to Christian Academy – Louisville 63-62 in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County.
JACKSON CITY (3-2) – Jackson City split their games on the week. In their first game of the week, Wolfe County came to Jackson and handed the Tigers a 79-52 loss. Then Jackson City defeated Jenkins 80-51 in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County.
WOLFE COUNTY (5-0) – Wolfe County won all 3 of their games on the week. They started with a 67-38 win at Powell County. The Wolves continued their winning ways with a 79-52 win at Jackson City. Wolfe County remained unbeaten on the season with a 76-62 win over Trigg County in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County.
56th DISTRICT
ESTILL COUNTY (3-2) – Estill County had a great week with 3 wins against 0 losses. First, they traveled to Madison Southern and came away with a 64-53 win. Next, the Engineers hosted Bell County and won 57-55 on a last second shot by Joe Benton. They finished the week with a win against at the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea with a 61-56 win over Bluegrass United of Lexington.
LEE COUNTY (2-4) – Lee County began the week at Betsy Layne, where they were defeated by a score of 93-50. They finished the week with their 2nd win of the season by beating Dayton 59-55 at the Bill Smallwood Classic in Berea.
OWSLEY COUNTY (1-1) – Owsley County suffered their first loss of the season against Jackson County 67-61 in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County.
POWELL COUNTY (1-4) – It was a rough week for Powell County. They lost all 3 games on the week. Their first loss was at home to Wolfe County by a score of 67-38. Next they played in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County and lost to the host school 97-76. The Pirates finished the week with a 60-46 loss at Menifee County.
