Eagles Get District Win 49-20 over Morgan

On a very somber night in Hyden, after tragedy struck the Leslie County football family this week, with the sudden death of a football parent. Players, coaches, and fans entered Eagle Field with heavy hearts, to watch Leslie County’s home and district opener against, the Morgan County Cougars.

The Eagles offense started rolling early and never looked back, as the offense rushed for nearly 400 Yards at a staggering pace of 10.5 yards per carry. The rushing attack paced by Senior RB Trent Asher with 253 yards and 5 TD’s on 15 carries, behind an offensive line that won the battle in the trenches all night. Showcasing once again, why Asher is not only one of the top football players from Eastern Kentucky, but the most underrated prospect in the state.

The Leslie County defense also showed up strong only allowing 99 yards on the ground and 80 passing.

Morgan County received the opening kickoff, and 3 plays later faced a 4th down and 1 to go. Leslie County’s Caden Gilbert and Jordan Collett stopped the runner a half yard short, resulting in a turn over on downs.

In return, the Eagles found paydirt first on a 30-yard run by Trent Asher. Brannon Stubblefield converted the PAT, with 8:28 to go in the first.

Morgan County’s next drive resulted in points with a 2-yard run from Jordan Sexton, but the Cougars failed to convert on the 2-point conversion.

Senior QB Zack Parker led the Eagles down the field on a 65-yard scoring drive, as Trent Asher found the endzone for a second time. The first quarter came to a close with the Eagles leading 14-6.

Morgan County’s first possession of the second quarter resulted in a turnover, Caden Gilbert knocked the ball loose, and Dillon Baker recovered the ball for the Eagles. The turnover set up another Leslie County touchdown run by Asher, from 2 yards out. The Eagles would miss the PAT, and extend the lead 20-6 with 11:26 left in the first half.

Morgan County fumbled on the following kickoff, with freshman Dalton Baker recovering the loose ball for the Eagles. Leslie County scored on a 13-yard option as Zack Parker pitched the ball to Asher, and he walked into endzone untouched.

The Eagles defense held the Cougars to a 3 and out, and got the ball back with 6:00 to go in the half. Senior running back Brannon Stubblefield found the endzone from 6 yards out and Zack Parker would find Wyatt Ostrander open in the endzone for the 2-point conversion.

The Morgan County offense found itself again in a fourth and 1, DE Caden Gilbert stepped up for the Eagles again, and tackled the ball carrier in the backfield. Time would expire in the second quarter with the Eagles leading 34-6.

Leslie County opened the second half on a 90-yard drive, with Asher scoring on a 20-yard run. Parker’s pass to Senior WR Anthony Boggs for a 2-point conversion, extended the Eagles lead 42-6.

The Eagles offense put together a 91-yard drive led by freshman QB Dalton Baker, resulting in a TD run from Junior RB Tyler Osborne from 10 yards out. The drive showed a glimpse of the future with Baker making big plays with his arm and feet. T he Eagles chalked up a district win over Morgan County 48-20.

Leslie County will travel to Middlesboro next week, in hopes of another district win. A win for the Eagles bolds well for a first-round home playoff game. It will be the Eagles third road game of the season, and first district away game. The Yellowjackets are 2-1, with wins over Harlan 44-0, and Pineville 35-20, and a loss to district opponent Breathitt County 35-20. It will be the first district home game for Middlesboro this season.
