Four Wildcats participating in NBA Orlando Summer League
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky men’s basketball players Trey Lyles and James Young will play in the NBA’s Utah Summer League, which begins Monday and runs through Thursday.
Lyles (2015) will play for the Utah Jazz while Young (2014) will suit up for the Boston Celtics for a third season.
Former Wildcats Aaron Harrison (Charlotte Hornets), Dakari Johnson (Oklahoma City Thunder), Alex Poythress (Orlando Magic Blue) and Marquis Teague (Dallas Mavericks) are currently playing in the NBA Orlando Summer League, which began Saturday. All four were in action on the first day:
- Teague – 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals
- Johnson – 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks
- Harrison – 12 points, four rebounds, one assists, one steal, one block
- Poythress – four points, two rebounds, one assists, one steal, on block
Summer league rosters for the Las Vegas league (July 8-18) will be announced at a later time.
The Utah league, which features Lyles and Young, includes four teams and six games in a round-robin format.
The NBA summer leagues are an important time of the year for professional players to either earn a free-agent contract, solidify their spot on an NBA roster, or develop and earn additional playing time for the NBA regular season.
UK had another three players (Jamal Murray, Skal Labissiere and Tyler Ulis) selected in the 2016 NBA Draft, boosting the Wildcats’ totals to 28 players drafted in the seven-year John Caliapri era.
