South Bend, IN. – September 28, 2024 – Taris Smith

The University of Louisville football team drops its first game of the season, falling 31-24 to No.16 Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

The 15th-ranked Cardinals got on the board early after a fumble recovery on the kickoff, setting up a 10-yard passing touchdown to Isaac Brown to give UofL an early 7-0 lead. The Fighting Irish responded quickly however, scoring on three consecutive drives to take a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, Louisville’s Tamarion McDonald recovered his second fumble of the game, setting up Tyler Shough’s touchdown pass to Ja’Corey Brooks for a five-yard score to bring the Cardinals within a touchdown.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Cardinals cut into the Notre Dame lead off the foot of Brock Travelstead, who nailed a school-record 56-yard field goal to keep UofL in the game.
The Fighting Irish stretched out their lead on the next drive, leading 31-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

Louisville kept fighting however, as Shough found Brooks in the back of the endzone for a 24-yard score to bring Louisville within a touchdown late in the fourth.

The Cardinal’s defense managed to force Notre Dame to a critical three-and-out but were unable to find the equalizing score on offense as time ran down.

Tyler Shough completed 24 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns on the game.

On the defensive end, Stanquan Clark paced the defense with eight tackles to go along with a forced fumble. T.J. Quinn recorded the lone sack of the day along with seven tackles.

Head Coach Jeff Brohm Said:
“It wasn’t a clean day for us and unfortunately that’s not good enough to win. Especially on the road at Notre Dame. I give a lot of credit to Notre Dame; they came to play and made a lot of plays to win the game. We made a lot of mistakes in critical situations that hurts us, as well as some turnovers. As coaches we got to be better to put our players in position to succeed and make sure those things don’t happen again. We have a tough stretch of games coming up so we need to be sharper moving forward.”
