The Girls basketball season really got into full swing during the week with the WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott County Central, the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County and the PRTC Classic at Jackson County. Many teams also opened District play during the week.
53rd DISTRICT
CORDIA (0-3) – Cordia continued to struggle with a 57-19 home loss to Knott County Central.
JUNE BUCHANAN (1-3) – June Buchanan lost their only game of the week to Knott County Central at home by a score of 58-26.
LETCHER CENTRAL (5-1) – Letcher Central went 3-0 on the week. The Lady Cougars started the week with a 57-45 home win over Johnson Central. Next, they hosted Mountain Mission of Grundy, VA and defeated them 80-62. Letcher finished the week with a blowout win over Betsy Layne 84-35 in the Pine Mountain Classic at Letcher Central.
KNOTT CENTRAL (3-1) – Knott County Central opened up district play with dominant wins at June Buchanan 58-26 and at Cordia 57-19.
54th DISTRICT
BUCKHORN (2-4) – Buckhorn lost all 3 of their games during the week. They started with a tough home loss to Powell County 38-35. Next they traveled to Wolfe County where the Lady Wolves won convincingly 76-49. They finished the week in Knightstown, Indiana with a 53-46 loss to Robertson County.
HAZARD (1-2) – Hazard took part in the WYMT Mountain Classic at Knott County Central. They won their semifinal game over Clay County 64-56. In the championship game, they lost 73-48 to South Laurel, the top team in the mountains.
LESLIE COUNTY (4-0) – The Lady Eagles remained undefeated with an 82-64 win at Jenkins.
PERRY CENTRAL (2-3) – Perry Central began the week by hosting North Laurel. They lost 67-48 with a score not indicative of how the game was played. The Lady Commodores then defeated Knox Central 71-68 at John C. Combs Arena. They finished the week with a 57-46 home loss to Pikeville.
55th DISTRICT
BREATHITT COUNTY (0-4) – Breathitt County lost to Prestonsburg 68-59 in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County to remain winless on the season. Breathitt’s game with Jackson City on Friday, the 13th was suspended due to loss of power and will be completed on Monday.
JACKSON CITY (3-1) – Jackson City went undefeated on the week with 2 wins against Lee County. The first was a 52-30 decision at Lee County. The second was a dominant 50-11 victory in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County. The completion of the Breathitt game will be on Monday.
RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN (4-1) – Riverside won their only game of the week at home against L.I.G.H.T. of Danville by a score of 82-66.
WOLFE COUNTY (5-0) – Wolfe County remained undefeated on the season with 3 wins during the week. The Lady Wolves defeated Menifee County at home by a score of 59-38. Next they hosted Buckhorn and defeated them 76-49. Finally, Wolfe County escaped Powell County with a 45-44 win.
56th DISTRICT
ESTILL COUNTY (2-3) – Estill County started the week with a 56-55 home win over Knox Central. Next, they traveled to East Jessamine, where they lost 60-44. The Lady Engineers finished the week in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County, where they lost to Somerset 65-46.
LEE COUNTY (0-5) – Lee County’s struggles continued with 3 lopsided losses. The first loss came at the hands of Jackson City at home by a score of 52-30. Next, they lost on the road to Jackson County 66-13. Lee finished the week with another loss to Jackson City 50-11 in the Peggy Moore Classic at Breathitt County.
OWSLEY COUNTY (1-2) – Owsley County played in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County and lost to the host school 65-62.
POWELL COUNTY (1-5) – Powell County started the week with a 38-35 win at Buckhorn. Then Morgan County came to Stanton and defeated the Lady Pirates 57-54. Powell County finished the week with another close home loss to Wolfe County 45-44.
