The Bengals defeated Tampa Bay 33-27 on Sunday in each team’s season opener. Cincinnati held a comfortable lead for much of the game, but the Buccaneers made it close late.
Winners: The Bengals’ Newly-Designed Defense
Cincinnati’s defense was far from ideal last season, and providing a solid defense for the Bengals’ high-powered offense was the major focus of Cincinnati’s offseason. The newly-built defense was a great sight for Who Dey Nation.
The defense scored a touchdown, generated four turnovers, and made some big stands in the red zone. Their performance brings a new mentality to Cincinnati’s organization and Super Bowl aspirations.
Losers: Baker Mayfield’s Ball Security
Baker Mayfield was 23-of-28 through the air for 216 yards with no passing touchdowns or interceptions. He also had five carries for 30 yards and one touchdown. However, Mayfield lost three fumbles on the afternoon, which drastically changed the outcome of the game.
Winners: Evan McPherson
Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson played a critical role in today’s win. McPherson was 4-of-4 on field goals, which included a 55-yarder and a 58-yarder. He was also 3-of-3 on extra points. The former Florida Gator is an absolute weapon for the Bengals, and also played a pivotal role in Cincinnati’s run to the Super Bowl in his rookie season.
Losers: Reuben Bain Jr.’s NFL Debut
Buccaneers edge Reuben Bain Jr. is a very talented rookie that many Bengals fans were eyeing when Cincinnati still owned the No. 10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. In his NFL debut, Bain tallied just one tackle. He’s still really talented and will likely be a force for years to come, but his debut left a lot to be desired.
Winners: Mike Gesicki
Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki led all players in receiving yards with 78 off five catches and one touchdown. His seven targets were tied for the most by any player in the matchup. The Buccaneers’ defense clearly made an effort to minimize the impact of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins; as the duo combined for just five catches and 71 yards. It led to opportunities for other receiving threats; and Gesicki answered the call with a big game.
The Bengals go to 1-0 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 0-1. Up next for Cincinnati is a road game against the Houston Texans on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1:00 p.m.
