In the words of Breathitt Head Coach Misty McAlarnis, “At tournament time, you survive and advance.” That is what Breathitt did tonight against a feisty and determined Buckhorn team to advance to the 14th Region Semi-Finals on Saturday. Points were extremely hard to come by for both teams in the first half as both teams had trouble putting the ball in the basket.

The Lady Cats controlled the opening Quarter on the strength of six points each by Seniors Amy Brewer and Hannah Griffith. Breathitt led at the end of the 1st Quarter 14-8. Both teams struggled in the 2nd Quarter with only three total field goals scored by the teams combined. At the half, Breathitt led 20-10.

Play picked up in the 3rd Quarter with Buckhorn making a 12-3 in the first six minutes of the Quarter, to cut the Breathitt lead to a point at 23-22 on threes by Liberty Neace and Kristen Hurley. The large Buckhorn crowd was loud and proud and spurred the Lady Wildcats . Breathitt answered the run through Freshman Adreonna Schutz with a basket and foul. The free throw was converted and the Lady Cats then went on to finish the Quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 32-22 headed to the 4th.

The 4th was a parade to the free throw line. Breathitt shot 20 free throws (converting 14) and Buckhorn shot 15 (converting 6). Schutz continually attached the basket and was at the line 12 times in the Quarter converting 8.
