Wildcats win 1-0 on Sunday to salvage game in SEC series
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – April 7, 2024
Karissa Hamilton hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning on the first pitch of the frame and Stephanie Schoonover pitched a complete-game shutout as the Kentucky Softball team won 1-0 over Texas A&M to take the Sunday series finale over the Aggies at Davis Diamond.
Schoonover had one of the best outings of her career Sunday when it mattered the most, going seven innings with seven strikeouts, and only two hits allowed the entire game on 108 pitches. The Aggies only had one hit going into the bottom of the seventh, where TAMU got a walk and a single, but Schoonover buckled down and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and close the book on the game.
Kentucky had three hits in the game against Aggie ace Emiley Kennedy, who also went the distance on two walks and seven strikeouts in a game that took just an hour and 48 minutes to play in front of a crowd of 1,728.
With the win, Kentucky improves to 24-14 on the season and is now 3-9 in Southeastern Conference play. The No. 14 Aggies fall to 31-8 with Sunday’s loss and now sits 10-5 in the SEC through its first five conference series of the season. The Wildcats will next play at Louisville on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET in a game televised by the ACC Network with Matt Schumacher and Carol Bruggeman on the call from Ulmer Stadium in the Derby City.

Karissa Hamilton’s solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning on the first pitch of the at bat was the key play of the game as she launched her third game-winning HR of the season just over the outstretched glove of Kramer Eschete to score the day’s only run for either team.
