October 13, 2018 – London, Kentucky – NATHAN LYTTLE – Bluegrass Sports Nation Perry Central Football Columnist
Another week, another win for the Perry County Central Commodores. They took down the North Laurel Jaguars in a game that eliminated the Jags from postseason play, clinched a playoff berth and set up a four-way tie for the district championship going into the last week of district play.
The Commodores got off to a slow start. An overthrow on the first play from scrimmage ended in an interception and North Laurel took over. The Jags punched in a touchdown and the Commodores found themselves giving up the first score of the game.
Perry answered back and the first half was back-and-forth until the buzzer sounded, literally. A penalty gave Coach Chris Larkey’s Jags one final play of the half with one second on the clock, affording them just enough time to throw a bomb into the end zone. The Jags went into the half with a 25-20 lead.
“The first half wasn’t problems with our schemes; it was our own foolishness,” Coach Ovie Canady said. “We fought to make a tackle with no arms once. We got a couple stupid penalties. We left a guy open that we knew the coverage on. We blitzed when we shouldn’t and they ran a zone and ripped us.”
The second half was all Commodores though. The Jags weren’t able to get anything going offensively and Perry managed to regain the lead in the third quarter and never look back, shutting out the Jags in the second half along the way.
“We just have to do our jobs. Those kids fixed everything in the second half and that’s what matters,” Canady said.
In the other district matchup of the night, Harlan County fell to Whitley County. The Colonel and Commodore victories set up a four-way tie going into the final district games of the season next week. The Commodores now need a little help to win a district championship.
“The biggest thing is we gotta win,” Canady said. “If we win, we’re no worse than second and host a home playoff game.
We will have more about next week’s matchups next week on Bluegrass Sports Nation, but for now, here is how the championship picture looks.
District standings:
Harlan County 2-1
Letcher Central 2-1
Perry Central 2-1
Whitley County 2-1
Letcher Central 0-4
There are two district games next week: Harlan County at Perry Central and Letcher Central at Whitley County.
If Whitley and Perry win, Perry wins the district.
If Letcher and Perry win, Letcher wins the district.
If Letcher and Harlan County win, Harlan County wins the district.
If Whitley and Harlan County win, Whitley wins the district.
“It didn’t happen the way we wanted it tonight and other people do control things for us,” Canady said. “We’ve just gotta play and hope things fall the way we need them to and I have to believe that they will. We’ve had bad luck at a lot of things and surely we’ll get some luck on this.”
