Kyle Larson Defeats Chris Buescher by 0.001 seconds at Kansas Speedway

The NASCAR Cup Series’ 12th points race of the season visited the vicinity of Kansas City hosted by the Kansas Speedway.  Kansas Speedway was constructed in 2001 and hosted its first NASCAR Cup Series race in 2011.

Christopher Bell piloted the No. 20 Camry to his first Cup pole position of the 2024 season and the 11th of his career after posting a pole-winning lap at 183.107 mph in 29.491 seconds.  Saddling shotgun on the front row was Ross Chastain, who laid down the second-fastest qualifying lap time at 182.704 mph in 29.556.

Advent Health 400 – Stage 1 Recap:

Ross Chastain powered past pole sitting Bell to inherit the early-Stage lead.  Chastain controlled the pace of the race until green flag pit opportunities for the majority of the field on lap 34.   Within a couple laps of pit stops, Kyle Larson advanced to battle Ross Chastain’s lead.  Kyle outdueled Chastain for the top position and rule the post with 28 laps to decide Stage 1.

Kyle Larson attempted to secure his position only to be overtaken by Denny Hamlin as he sharpshot under Larson on Lap 68.

Denny Hamlin continued to add to his Playoff resume winning Stage 1 at Kansas.

Advent Health 400 – Stage 2 Recap:

As teams attended Stage 2 pit refreshment, Ross Chastain edged ahead of the field exiting pit row. Chastain’s buffer was challenged by polesitter Christopher Bell.  The tangling two allowed Larson to utilize the preferred high lane to manipulate past the battling frontrunners.

Laps checked off without caution, race leader Larson opted for green flag pit service with 45 Laps to complete the Stage. Chris Buescher profited from Kyle Larson’s costly pit-row error and rotated to the front and claimed stage 2 honors.

Advent Health 400 – Final Stage Recap:

Kyle Bush’s single car spin out on Lap 260 permitted race teams to strategize their pit service for an overtime shootout. Securing the lead, Chris Buescher pinched Kyle Larson to the outside barrier through Turn 3 and 4.  Committed to the outside lane, Kyle Larson rode the rim as both he and  Buescher tangled, all while Martin Truex Jr.  and Chase Elliott joined the party.

Both Buescher and Larson crossed the finish line dead even ahead of Truex and Elliott.  

Larson emerged as the race winner by 0.001 seconds over Buescher, which set a new closest-recorded finish in the history of NASCAR Cup Series.

Larson checked off his 25th in NASCAR’s Cup Series career win, ranking him in a tie with Jim Paschal and Joe Weatherly on the all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins list.

Kyle additionally logged his second victory at Kansas Speedway and second of the 2024 Cup Series season.
