Owsley County played a determined Powell County team in Stanton Friday in a big district matchup before finally squeaking past the Lady Pirates 49-47.

Powell matched Owsley basketball for basketball in the  first quarter and led 11-10 at the end of the period. Owsley regained the lead in the second quarter at 20-18 going into the half. Owsley wasn’t shooting a great percentage and coupled with early foul troubles for their 6’2 freshman center Macey Brown the Lady Owls had trouble getting untracked. Powell was also able to manage a slower tempo game than what Owsley likes to play.

Powell regained the lead at the end of the third quarter at 36-35, and was leading 44-41 with about 2 minutes remaining in the game. But Carly Smith came up big with three steals in the final minutes of the contest which led to baskets. Macey Brown also had some big baskets. Owsley retook the lead and held on to claim the victory.

The win gives the Lady Owls a 2-0 record in district play and Powell is 0-1.

Scoring for Owsley: Macey Brown 16 and 8 rebounds, Carly Smith had 13,  7 assists and 7 steals, Addison Terry 10 points and 11 rebounds, Laya Lynch 8 and 6 deflections, Shelby Murray 1 and 8 rebounds, Kenzie Grubb 1.

Trinity Roman’s for Powell was game high scorer with 19 points and guard Mykyra Caudill finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Owsley’s next game is at Perry Central Tuesday. Powell is in a holiday tournament at Paintsville starting Wednesday, December 20.
