Powell Uses Hot Start to Defeat Wolfe 79-63

Powell Coach Ken Jones wanted to get out to a fast start in this 14th Region Quarterfinal, and his Lady Pirates did just that, scoring the first 13 points of the game. Senior Emily Branham had nine in the 1st Quarter and Sophomore Macey Howell led the charge with 11. End of the 1st, Powell led 24-10.

Powell extended their lead in the 2nd Quarter outscoring the Lady Wolves 18-12 behind four a piece by Seniors Ashley King and Elizabeth Scott. The halftime margin was 20 with Powell leading 42-22.

Wolfe got into gear in the 3rd Quarter behind 11 by 55th District Player of the Year Hailey Smith. Wolfe outscored the Lady Pirates 20-12 in the quarter and cut the margin to nine, 51-42 to begin the final period.

Powell shut the door in the 4th behind 11 from Branham with nine of those coming from the line as she connected on nine of 12. Allison Stamper closed out her career with a couple of her trademark threes, for six of her 13 on the night.

POWELL: Team – 1st Quarter 24; 2nd Quarter 18; 3rd Quarter 9; 4th Quarter 28; Total – 79. Individual – Emily Branham 26; Macey Howell 24; Ashley King 12; Elizabeth Scott 7; Breanna Bush 4; Samantha Watkins 3; and Lauren Payne 3.

WOLFE: Team – 1st Quarter 20; 2nd Quarter 12; 3rd Quarter 20; 4th Quarter 21; Total – 63. Individual – Hailey Smith 24; Allison Stamper 13; Brianna Colwell 10; Madison Neeley 8; Maggie Creech 5; and Ally Bailey 3.

Powell will play Knott Central in the Regional Semi-Final at Noon on Saturday. The two met on just two weeks ago with Knott prevailing 53-48 in Hindman.
