Booneville, Ky – February 3, 2024 – Deron Mays

The Whitley County Colonels used an effective press defense that forced Owsley County into numerous turnovers and jumped out to a 22-11 first quarter lead in the Bobby Bowling Classic in Booneville. The Colonels won every quarter on their way to a 72-41 victory. Their record is now a very impressive 17-5.

The Colonels had a balance scoring attack with ten players scoring in the game. They were led by Danny Ellis, a smooth 6’3 senior wing, with 16 points. Bryson Mahan, an eighth grader, had 13 points. Lucas Queener scored 11 points, Bryce Anderson 8, Shane Parker 7, Jackson Petrey 5, Aaron Rowe 4, Tucker Hale 3, Logan Petrey 3, and Garrett Sharp 2.

Senior guard Jake McCoy led Owsley with 16 points, which included four 3 pointers, and Dylan Gay had 12. Chase Pryse and Trenton Herald both had 5 points and seventh grader Eelan Bobrowski-Hall hit a 3 pointer late in the game.

Owsley County coach Neil Terry hopes games like this can better prepare his Owls for tournament play in a few weeks. “I think games like this are a good teaching tool to get us ready for district play. When you play teams of this quality you immediately know what it will take going forward to get better.”

Before the game Natasha Bowling, wife of the late Bobby Bowling who the Classic is named in honor of, presented Owls Senior Wesley Cope with the Bobby Bowling Built Different Award.
