CAMPTON – April 18, 2023 – Brendon D. Miller
Wolfe County is headed back to the All A State Tournament after winning a great Championship Game on Tuesday Night in Campton 4-3 over the Hazard Lady Bulldogs.
Sarah Smith and Chloy Creech were the engine for the Wolfe offense as Smith was four for four on the night and accounted for two of the four WC runs including the game winner. Creech was three for four on the night with the winning RBI and went the distance in the circle for the win.
Hazard is destined for this title in the coming years, and many others, as they played so well in this game and in getting to the final by defeating Breathitt 8-1, Leslie 16-1, and Lee 3-2 in a thrilling walk off pinch hit in-the-park home run by 7th grader Mikayla Shepherd last Thursday. To perform this well at such a young age is remarkable. Coach Keith Combs started two Seniors (one as flex), one Sophomore, five 8th graders and two 7th graders (one as DH) in the game. Peyton Fields, one of those 7th graders has been phenomenal in the circle.
The Wolfe defense was excellent on the night with Special mention to Kenzie Miller who was stellar at third base and Alex Tolson who was the same at second base for WC.
SCORING: 1st – WC – Sarah Smith single, Chloy Creech single to begin inning – Smith scored on FC to 1B by Kenzie Miller; Creech scored on tag and advance on fly out by Abby Stone. 1st – H – Mallory Combs reached on an error; Ryleigh Griffith hit by pitch – both scored on single by Peyton Fields
2nd – WC – Raygen Holbrook triple – scored on single by Sarah Smith. 2nd – H – Triple by Mikayla Shepherd – scored on out by Bray Eddington
7th – WC – Sarah Smith double – scored on single by Chloy Creech.
