Week two of the regular season was an exciting stretch that gave us some great in region competition and painted a little better picture of how teams within the 14 region stand. Many of the teams that are predicted to be near the top come playoff time squared off in early season contests. At the close of the second week, many coaches and fans have a better idea of the identity of their teams as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

There are six teams in the 14th Region that have winning records at the end of week two. The leader, as of right now, is the Hazard Bulldogs. After making a Cinderella run to the State Final Four last season, the Bulldogs have picked right back up where they left off. The Bulldogs finished week two still unblemished with a 7-0 record (4-0 in the region). Sophomore Jarrett Napier threw a 5 inning perfect game against the visiting Estill County Engineers on Friday night as well.

The Perry Central Commodores are also reloading as they have continued their winning ways to start the season 6-1 (3-0) with wins this week against Pike Central, Leslie, and Nicholas County. Bobby Keith Dixon’s young squad is taking the torch and running as they continue the Commodore’s winning ways.

Knott Central has also started hot with a 6-1 kickoff of their own. The Chris Amburgey led squad had a huge regional win this week against an Estill County team that threw their ace, Rocky Hix, against the Patriots. The Patriots left Irvine with a 9-6 win as well as picking up wins against Magoffin and Letcher County Central in convincing fashion.

Breathitt 5-4 (4-2) also stayed above .500 this week as the Bobcats continue to impress this season. The Bobcats invoked the mercy rule three times this week winning 19-0, 16-2, and 11-1 in three of their five contests.

Jackson City 3-1 (2-1) split a pair of games this week as they defeated Wolfe 12-4 and were beaten in a marathon by Lee County 20-19. Finally, Lee County 3-2 (3-0) had a rough week going 1-2 and falling to Burgin 10-5 and Jenkins 2-1.

Many of the teams in the 14th are taking advantage of spring break and are spending it at an ocean somewhere. Team bonding, different venues, and baseball are on tap for the week before a return next week to normal regular season play. High school baseball is a grind! There is a long season with a lot of upsets waiting in the wing.
