The Greenville Drive broke a sixth-inning tie with two runs and then held on for a 6-5 win over the Lexington Legends Sunday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Legends took the lead with three runs in the first inning. With two outs and no one on base, Khalil Lee beat out a bunt, and later scored on a triple by Emmanuel Rivera. Gabriel Cancel followed with a two-run homer, his ninth home run of the year.
Greenville failed to score in the second inning after having the bases loaded and no outs, but the Drive took the lead with four runs in the third. Steven Reveles reached first on an error by third baseman John Brontsema. Lorenzo Cedrola doubled, moving Reveles to third, from where he scored on a wild pitch by Legends’ starter Ofreidy Gomez. Tyler Hill’s double scored Cedrola, and Roldani Baldwin’s two-run homer put the Drive in front 4-3.
The Legends tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, and the score remained 4-4 until the top of the sixth. Tucker Tubbs led off with a single to left field. Mitchell Gunsolus’ ground ball toward second hit Tubbs for the first out of the inning, leaving Gunsolus at first. Isaias Lucena doubled, sending Gunsolus to third. After Granger Studdard was called out on strikes, Reveles’ infield single scored Gunsolus, and Lucena came home when first baseman Manny Olloque committed an error when receiving a throw after Cedrola had grounded to third.
The Drive took the 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth, when Marten Gasparini hit a solo homer with one out for the game’s final run.
Greenville reliever Kyle Hart (3-2), who pitched four innings after entering the game at the start of the fifth, got the win. Matthew Gorst worked the ninth inning and picked up his second save.
Lexington reliever Vance Tatum (2-1), who took over for Gomez at the start of the sixth inning, was the losing pitcher.
Greenville has won two out of three in the series, which concludes Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
